Sivakumar Balasubramanian

Siva is a Professor and the current head of the Department of Bioengineering at CMC Vellore. He joined the department in August 2014 as a Lecturer. His basic degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Pondicherry Engineering College. He then did his MTech in Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and his PhD in Bioengineering from the Arizona State University.

His research interests are in developing and validating neurorehabilitation technology, quantitative movement analysis, and human motor control/learning.

Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, trying different cuisines, and riding his motorcycle.

Cassandra Dominica Solomons

Cassandra is a lecturer in the Bioengineering Department at CMC Vellore. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Instrumentation Engineering from Avinashilingam University in 2000. Following her graduation, she worked as an electronics engineer at the Rehabilitation Institute at CMC Vellore. In 2003, she received the DfIDSSS scholarship to pursue a masters degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey, UK. In 2005, she joined the Bioengineering Department at CMC Vellore as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) for a year before undertaking a second master’s degree in Bioengineering through a joint program between CMC Vellore and Sree Chitra Tirunal University. She received the DST WOS A grant for her research and completed her PhD in Bioengineering from Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, in 2019.

Her research interests include Neuromodulation, Instrumentation for rehabilitation and sensor technology.

She enjoys reading, jogging, crocheting and baking.

Mrs. C. Lalitha Venkatesan

Mrs. C. Lalitha Venkatesan joined CMC College of Nursing in 2002 as a Stenographer. In September 2014, she transitioned to the Bioengineering department. Currently, she serves as the secretary for the Bioengineering department, overseeing all administrative tasks. In addition to her professional responsibilities, she enjoys traveling, reading books, and spending time with students and staff members.

Monisha Yuvaraj

Monisha Yuvaraj

Monisha is a PhD scholar from the 3 institute Biomedical devices and technology program (IIT Madras-CMC Vellore-SCTIMST). She did her dual degree B.Tech in ECE and M.Tech in signal processing and communication system design from IIITD&M Kancheepuram. She is a medical aspirant turned engineer and is very passionate about applying her engineering skills in healthcare technology. In line with her interest she is currently working with BiolRehab group from CMC vellore and Neuromechanics lab, Department of applied mechanics, IIT Madras. With an objective to simplify human machine interface for routine use in clinic, she is currently working on EMG-BCI based movement intent detection for assisted hand rehabilitation in severely affected stroke patient. Apart from research she loves driving to unexplored places, dancing and a pinch of cooking.

Parvathy Neelakandan

Parvathy is a PhD student with BioRehab group, CMC Vellore and Neuromechanics lab, IIT Madras. She has a background in Computer Science and Computational Neuroscience. Her interests in machine learning and its underlying inspirations from Neuroscience motivated her to pursue a second masters in Computational Neuroscience from BCCN, Berlin. She interned at ‘Machine learning in Clinical Neuroimaging’ lab at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (2020), followed by ‘Neural Information Processing’ group (2020) and ‘Modelling of Cognitive Processes’ lab,(2021) both at Technical University, Berlin. She also had a stint with the Technology and Quality team (2016) at Cisco Systems, Bangalore. Following her curiosity on infinite application opportunities of computational modelling in the medical domain, she joined our lab to work on machine learning/deep learning models for arm use assessment using wearable sensors. Besides research, she enjoys travelling, trekking and movies.

Neelakshi

NEELAKSHI GANGULY

Neelakshi is a PhD scholar who joined  BioRehab Lab through the Three Institute PhD programme of IIT Madras in July 2022. Along with our lab, she is also collaborating with the R2D2 lab of IIT Madras.

She graduated in Electrical Engineering.  Her keen interest in neuroscience led her to a master’s in Biomedical Engineering from Jadavpur University,  Kolkata and then dived into  Brain Computer-Interface for her thesis work. To nurture her interest she also joined as a Research intern at the Institute of Neuroscience, Kolkata( IN-K).

She is presently working on upper limb Neurorehabilitation (Human-Human interaction with PLUTO).

Pooja Vinayagamoorthy

Pooja is a PhD research scholar in the prestigious JDP (Tri-institute) PhD program. With a deep interest in the intersection of technology and medicine, I chose Biomedical Engineering for my undergraduate studies. Exploring the realm of Medical Device Technology, I specialized in Medical Electronics from College of Engineering Guindy.

During my undergraduate and postgraduate internships at the  Biorehab Research Group at CMC-Vellore, I was captivated by Rehabilitation Engineering. This experience shaped my vision and fueled my commitment to developing a Sensor-based System for Independent Task-Oriented Assessment and Rehabilitation for the Upper Limb(SITAR).

In addition to my academic pursuits, I actively contribute as a Teaching Assistant for the Diagnostics and Therapeutics Laboratory and the Advanced Biomedical Device Design Laboratory at CEG. Sharing my knowledge in subjects like Mathematics and Biology brings me great joy, particularly when teaching school students. When I’m not immersed in academia, I find solace in the art of sketching, allowing my creativity to flow. And of course, my mischievous feline companion brings a delightful disruption to my moments of solitude.

Vaithees Ragavan

Vaithees Ragavan

He is a mechanical engineer and has worked as a design engineer in the AEC industry.

He joined Biorehab group,CMC Vellore and R2D2, IITM in September 2019 as a project associate and had worked on design and fabrication of Arm Rehabilitation Robot (AREBO). The opportunity to broaden his skill set while working on cost-effective and innovative projects that could positively influence lives has driven him towards assistive technologies.

He is currently pursuing his MS. in Bioengineering and is working on developing an instrumented treadmill for wheelchair users and an IMU based tracker to monitor wheelchair use, as a part of his thesis.

He loves adventure sports and playing basketball and football.

Minusha S

Minusha S

Sujith is a MS Bioengineering student in CMC. He has a bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Karunya University, Coimbatore. After that, he joined the Department of Radiation Oncology, CMC Vellore, as a Research Fellow under the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) project, in 2017. During his tenure in Radiation Oncology, he was also involved in teaching Basic electronics and MatLab programming for BSLAP and M.Sc. medical physics students.

Sujith joined our lab as a Research Fellow in 2021, on a computer vision-based project for upper-limb assessment and is currently pursuing MS in Bioengineering. He is working on the Instrumented Arm-Skateboard (ARMBO) – a device that can be used for upper-limb assessment and rehabilitation, as part of his MS thesis.

Sujith loves to teach programming languages. He also likes to play guitar in his leisure time.

Johanna Afreena I

Johanna Afreena

Diwakar graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut in 2021. He then joined the Biological Learning and Rehabilitation Group at Christian Medical College Vellore for his Master’s degree. Currently, he is working on two projects: ROMIU, a device to measure joint range of motion, and AFFECT-AI for long-term monitoring of hemiparetic patients. Diwakar is interested in linear algebra, signal processing, and machine learning. He enjoys reading and playing badminton in his free time.

Lavanya Joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate in January 2023. She did M.Tech in Embedded Systems from VIT University, Vellore after which she worked in the IT sector for around 4 years. Her experiences include working as Technical Consultant at Central Research Laboratory (BEL), Bangalore and JRF in the department of Bioengineering at CMC, vellore. She is currently working on the project Plug and Train robot (PLUTO).

Joshua is a MS Bioengineering Student in our Department. He has a bachelor’s degree in BioMedical Engineering from Alpha College of Engineering,Chennai. After a brief exposure in Bangalore Baptist hospital as BioMedical Engineer, he worked in Asha Kiran Hospital for 4 years in various capacities as Biomedical Engineer & Safety officer.

He is working on FLAMOS( Flap Monitoring system)- a device to measure the saturation of Blood Oxygen and Temperature in Flaps( Plastic Surgery).His area of interest is Biomaterials & Instrumentation and application in the Medical field. Ann David

Ann David

Ann David is a postdoctoral researcher with R2D2 lab at IIT Madras and BioRehab Group. She completed her PhD in Biomedical Devices and Technology through the joint PhD progamme conducted by IIT Madras, CMC Vellore and SCTIMST Trivandrum. Her PhD thesis was on understanding the asymmetry in arm use among stroke patients with one-side weakness. She completed her masters in bioengineering from CMC Vellore and bachelors in electronics and communication engineering from Govt. Model Engineering College, Kerala.

Having worked closely with patients and clinicans for the past 10 years, her research interests are in developing affordable and easy to use technological solutions. She also has interests in computational neurorehabilitation. She enjoys exploring new places and music.

Aravind Nehrujee

Aravind Nehrujee

Aravind is a Ph.D. scholar who recently completed a joint program between IIT Madras and CMC Vellore, specializing in the development of robotic technologies for assessing and training hand functions. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from VIT University Vellore and a master’s degree in Bioengineering from CMC Vellore.

During his Ph.D., Aravind focused on developing and clinically validating PLUTO, a robot designed for hand rehabilitation. His research interests include rehabilitation engineering, serious games, neuromechanics, and virtual reality. Aravind is passionate about developing innovative solutions that improve the effectiveness and accessibility of rehabilitation, with the ultimate goal of benefiting patients and enhancing their quality of life.

Achu Vinod Thomas

Achu Vinod Thomas

Achu is a Senior Research Fellow at CMC.

She obtained her B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Trivandrum under the University of Kerala. It was during this time that she got introduced to the field of machine learning – particularly during her internship with Curvelogics. She worked on developing an automated irrigation system which involved the use of machine learning and IoT.

Following her course, she worked in Ernst and Young GDS in Bangalore for a year and a half. As an Associate Analyst, she dabbled in natural language processing and big data.

She completed her M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering with AI and Machine Learning from Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. During her final year, she interned with Philips where she worked on deep learning models for abdominal organ detection in ultrasound. This experience of exploring different medical imaging techniques deepened her interest in the immense potential of AI in the medical field.

She is interested in using AI to make a difference, especially in the field of healthcare, which is what led her to CMC. She is currently working on integrating machine learning to enhance feedback and interactivity in a robot that deals with training hand function.

During her leisure hours, she likes to spend time on music. She also enjoys reading, art and exploring new experiences and things.

Sriramachandran V

Sriramachandran V

Sriram joined as Junior Research Fellow at the department of Bioengineering, CMC Vellore currently working on the HyperCube project – a multi-functional sensor based device for hand neuro rehabilitation. I did my undergraduate in mechanical engineering from Ganadipathy Tulsi’s Jain Engineering college, Vellore. I joined CMC Vellore and worked as a management trainee before pursuing my postgraduate in MS Bioengineering from Christian Medical College. During my master’s I worked on the design and development of the Hypercube. Being a part of the biological learning and rehabilitation group for the past two years has made me pick up an interest in upper limb neurorehabilitation. I enjoy designing and working on the design of Hypercube has made me feel content.

During my leisure time I like reading books (both fiction and non-fiction) , sketching, illustrating and doing digital painting

SARATHKUMAR R

Sarath  is a Junior Research Fellow working in CMC Bioengineering .completed his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Kingston engineering college, Vellore. then joined as an Apprentice trainee in the Electrical maintenance department at BHEL for a year.

He joined as an Intern at CMC under Dr.Sivakumar Balasubrmanian for a duration of 6 months and then continued as a project associate in the Bioengineering department. He worked on the PLAEBO Robotics system, PCB designing, software development and management.

In April 2021, He joined R2D2 as a project associate. Currently working on the AREBO project. (PCB designing, Electronic circuit testing and 3D CAD/CAM designing) and also working on the Development of instrumented wheelchair activity tracking.He is working on the (SITAR) project game and device development.

His hobbies are playing football, gardening during his free time and being interested in science fiction movies.

Sathish Balaraman

Sathish Balaraman

Sathish holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology in Vellore. He expanded his knowledge and skills by pursuing a master’s program in Bioengineering at Christian Medical College, also located in Vellore. During his master’s thesis, he made significant contributions to the development of the Plug and Train Robot for hand rehabilitation (PLUTO).

Motivated by his passion for creating rehabilitation devices, Sathish joined the PLUTO project as a project associate. In this role, he focuses on mechanical design, product sourcing,  inventory management and clinical trails actively contributing to the project’s endeavors in commercializing PLUTO. When he’s not working, Sathish enjoys pursuing his hobbies, such as watching movies and sports.

Clinton N

Clinton, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Kingston Engineering College, He has a total of 10 years of professional experience. He began his career as an Aadhaar enrolment agency at RRS Universal. Afterward, he transitioned to a different administrative role at Nephrocare Health Services Pvt. Ltd. He has been involved in healthcare administration, specifically managing centers across Tamil Nadu. His responsibilities included overseeing profit and loss (PnL), billing reconciliation, center staff management, and training administrators for dialysis hospitals.

In April 2022, joined the PLUTO team as a Project Associate Joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore. In this role, he was responsible for various tasks such as setting up inventory, managing fabrication work, handling administrative duties, and providing support for strap and foam preparation for the Pluto Project.Additionally, He interacts with various stakeholders in the mobility assistive space, including user patients for clinical trials, medical professionals, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers.

Apart from his professional endeavors, Clinton has a strong passion for both indoor and outdoor sports, with a particular interest in football

Praveen Kumar M

PRAVEEN KUMAR M

Praveen Kumar completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Global Institute of Engineering & Technology in Vellore. After his graduation, he gained three years of experience working as an R&D and Service Engineer for Indian railway track inspection, as well as metro rail track inspection in S.V.A. Rikkon Lubes Pvt. Ltd. He also worked in the lubrication field as a Service Engineer in Auto Lubricators (SKF LINCOLN).

Later, Praveen joined as a Project Associate in the Plug and Train Robot for hand rehabilitation (PLUTO) a collaboration project between  IITM and CMC campus in Vellore. In this role, he is responsible for mechanical design and operating various 3D printing machines to handle, fabricate, and assemble parts of PLUTO. Additionally, he interacts with user patients for clinical trials, medical professionals, and various rehab centres in hospitals.

During his free time, Praveen enjoys travelling to different places to create lasting memories. He also indulges in playing cricket and badminton in his leisure time.

Thiagu S

THIAGU S

He joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate in JUNE 2022 for the project AREBO , which is robot under development for Arm and Shoulder Rehabiliation. He has been a part of Biological Learning and Neuro-rehab group at CMC – Vellore, Bio-Engineering department for the past 1 year. He holds a bachelors degree in Mechanical engineering and his special interest in design domain and subjects persuaded him to do a masters in Engineering Design.He is focused on applying his design skills in developing the robot parts and assembly.

He is currently engaged in development of MARS,(Mobile Arm Rehabilitation Support) in the neuro-rehab lab, which is simplified, compact & portable version of AREBO aimed at Home Rehab therapy. He is actively engaged in putting forth design demands, ideas of his team members into reality. He carries out his other responsibilities including  the 3-d printing  tasks, fabrication work, material and financial management of the assistive device project effectively.

Apart from Job, he likes to explore music and Yoga.

Manavalan A

MANAVALAN A

Manavalan has a strong educational background in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jeppiaar SRR Engineering College in Chennai. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he gained practical experience as a maintenance trainee at Sri Ramalinga Mills in Aruppukottai. He then worked for a few months in the Maintenance & Store Department at Kusauto PVT Ltd in Chennai.

In June 2022, Manavalan Joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate. His work there involves the design and development of a portable weighing scale specifically designed for bed-ridden patients. It’s great to see his expertise being utilised in a project that aims to improve the healthcare industry.

Outside of work, Manavalan enjoys playing cricket and watching sports and movies. He also has a passion for travelling, which allows him to explore new places and broaden his horizons.

Bowya B

BOWYA B

Bowya completed her undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jain Engineering College, Vellore. Following her graduation, Bowya started her professional journey as an Apprentice Trainee in Quality Management at Schneider Electric, where she gained 11 months of valuable experience.

Since 2017, Bowya has been working as a Research Fellow in the Department of Physiology at CMC Vellore. Her primary focus is on a blood pressure project, which involves device development and clinical validation. She works closely with Dr. Suresh R. Devasahayam and Dr. Sathya Subramani, who provide guidance and supervision. Bowya’s responsibilities in this role include electronic circuit design, assembly, and testing, software development and maintenance, as well as clinical trial and  data management.

July 2022, Bowya joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate. Her current responsibilities revolve around PCB designing and testing of a hand-held dynamometer. Additionally, she is actively involved in the PLUTO project, which includes conducting clinical trials and working on electrical aspects.

Apart from her professional pursuits, Bowya enjoys playing badminton, travelling during rainy days, watching series, spending quality time with loved ones, and dancing

Being a part of the biological learning and rehabilitation group for the past two years has made me pick up an interest in upper limb neurorehabilitation. I enjoy designing and working on the design of Hypercube has made me feel content.

SARATHKUMAR R

Sarath  is a Junior Research Fellow working in CMC Bioengineering .completed his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Kingston engineering college, Vellore. then joined as an Apprentice trainee in the Electrical maintenance department at BHEL for a year.

He joined as an Intern at CMC under Dr.Sivakumar Balasubrmanian for a duration of 6 months and then continued as a project associate in the Bioengineering department. He worked on the PLAEBO Robotics system, PCB designing, software development and management.

In April 2021, He joined R2D2 as a project associate. Currently working on the AREBO project. (PCB designing, Electronic circuit testing and 3D CAD/CAM designing) and also working on the Development of instrumented wheelchair activity tracking.He is working on the (SITAR) project game and device development.

His hobbies are playing football, gardening during his free time and being interested in science fiction movies.

Sathish Balaraman

Sathish Balaraman

Sathish holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology in Vellore. He expanded his knowledge and skills by pursuing a master’s program in Bioengineering at Christian Medical College, also located in Vellore. During his master’s thesis, he made significant contributions to the development of the Plug and Train Robot for hand rehabilitation (PLUTO).

Motivated by his passion for creating rehabilitation devices, Sathish joined the PLUTO project as a project associate. In this role, he focuses on mechanical design, product sourcing,  inventory management and clinical trails actively contributing to the project’s endeavors in commercializing PLUTO. When he’s not working, Sathish enjoys pursuing his hobbies, such as watching movies and sports.

Clinton, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Kingston Engineering College, He has a total of 10 years of professional experience. He began his career as an Aadhaar enrolment agency at RRS Universal. Afterward, he transitioned to a different administrative role at Nephrocare Health Services Pvt. Ltd. He has been involved in healthcare administration, specifically managing centers across Tamil Nadu. His responsibilities included overseeing profit and loss (PnL), billing reconciliation, center staff management, and training administrators for dialysis hospitals.

In April 2022, joined the PLUTO team as a Project Associate Joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore. In this role, he was responsible for various tasks such as setting up inventory, managing fabrication work, handling administrative duties, and providing support for strap and foam preparation for the Pluto Project.Additionally, He interacts with various stakeholders in the mobility assistive space, including user patients for clinical trials, medical professionals, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers.

Apart from his professional endeavors, Clinton has a strong passion for both indoor and outdoor sports, with a particular interest in football

Praveen Kumar completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Global Institute of Engineering & Technology in Vellore. After his graduation, he gained three years of experience working as an R&D and Service Engineer for Indian railway track inspection, as well as metro rail track inspection in S.V.A. Rikkon Lubes Pvt. Ltd. He also worked in the lubrication field as a Service Engineer in Auto Lubricators (SKF LINCOLN).

Later, Praveen joined as a Project Associate in the Plug and Train Robot for hand rehabilitation (PLUTO) a collaboration project between  IITM and CMC campus in Vellore. In this role, he is responsible for mechanical design and operating various 3D printing machines to handle, fabricate, and assemble parts of PLUTO. Additionally, he interacts with user patients for clinical trials, medical professionals, and various rehab centres in hospitals.

During his free time, Praveen enjoys travelling to different places to create lasting memories. He also indulges in playing cricket and badminton in his leisure time.

He joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate in JUNE 2022 for the project AREBO , which is robot under development for Arm and Shoulder Rehabiliation. He has been a part of Biological Learning and Neuro-rehab group at CMC – Vellore, Bio-Engineering department for the past 1 year. He holds a bachelors degree in Mechanical engineering and his special interest in design domain and subjects persuaded him to do a masters in Engineering Design.He is focused on applying his design skills in developing the robot parts and assembly.

He is currently engaged in development of MARS,(Mobile Arm Rehabilitation Support) in the neuro-rehab lab, which is simplified, compact & portable version of AREBO aimed at Home Rehab therapy. He is actively engaged in putting forth design demands, ideas of his team members into reality. He carries out his other responsibilities including  the 3-d printing  tasks, fabrication work, material and financial management of the assistive device project effectively.

Apart from Job, he likes to explore music and Yoga.

Manavalan A

MANAVALAN A

Manavalan has a strong educational background in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jeppiaar SRR Engineering College in Chennai. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he gained practical experience as a maintenance trainee at Sri Ramalinga Mills in Aruppukottai. He then worked for a few months in the Maintenance & Store Department at Kusauto PVT Ltd in Chennai.

In June 2022, Manavalan Joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate. His work there involves the design and development of a portable weighing scale specifically designed for bed-ridden patients. It’s great to see his expertise being utilised in a project that aims to improve the healthcare industry.

Outside of work, Manavalan enjoys playing cricket and watching sports and movies. He also has a passion for travelling, which allows him to explore new places and broaden his horizons.

Bowya completed her undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jain Engineering College, Vellore. Following her graduation, Bowya started her professional journey as an Apprentice Trainee in Quality Management at Schneider Electric, where she gained 11 months of valuable experience.

Since 2017, Bowya has been working as a Research Fellow in the Department of Physiology at CMC Vellore. Her primary focus is on a blood pressure project, which involves device development and clinical validation. She works closely with Dr. Suresh R. Devasahayam and Dr. Sathya Subramani, who provide guidance and supervision. Bowya’s responsibilities in this role include electronic circuit design, assembly, and testing, software development and maintenance, as well as clinical trial and  data management.

July 2022, Bowya joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate. Her current responsibilities revolve around PCB designing and testing of a hand-held dynamometer. Additionally, she is actively involved in the PLUTO project, which includes conducting clinical trials and working on electrical aspects.

Apart from her professional pursuits, Bowya enjoys playing badminton, travelling during rainy days, watching series, spending quality time with loved ones, and dancing

Lavanya Varshini

Lavanya Joined R2D2(IITM) and Department of Bioengineering,CMC Vellore as a Project Associate in January 2023. She did M.Tech in Embedded Systems from VIT University, Vellore after which she worked in the IT sector for around 4 years. Her experiences include working as Technical Consultant at Central Research Laboratory (BEL), Bangalore and JRF in the department of Bioengineering at CMC, vellore. She is currently working on the project Plug and Train robot (PLUTO).
