Master of Science (MS) in Bioengineering

The Master of Science (MS) in Bioengineering program is administered by the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Science and Technology (SCTIMST) in Trivandrum. The primary objective of the MS in Bioengineering program is to equip engineering graduates with the necessary skills to conduct research and development within a medical institution, directly contributing to the advancement of healthcare in India.

The MS in Bioengineering program is designed as a specialized engineering curriculum with a strong emphasis on research. Students will dedicate their first year to coursework, followed by a year-long research project. During their studies, students will closely collaborate with one or more clinical or basic science departments at CMC Vellore, where they will formulate a research question to pursue as the topic of their MS thesis.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will have various career prospects, including opportunities in academic research, teaching, and research and development (R&D) within the medical devices industry.


Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in engineering, preferably in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, or an equivalent field


The program follows a structured curriculum spanning two years.


All students admitted to the MS in Bioengineering program will receive a stipend to support their studies and research endeavors.

M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering & Ph.D. in Medical Devices and Technology

The M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering and Ph.D. in Medical Devices and Technology programs are jointly offered by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Madras), the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) in Trivandrum, and the Christian Medical College, Vellore. Students enrolled in these programs will spend designated durations at each institution.

The objective of the Clinical Engineering program is to train engineers in the management and effective utilization of technology in hospitals and healthcare settings, ensuring their safety and efficiency. The M.Tech. program has a duration of 2 years and includes a mandatory internship.

The Ph.D. program in Medical Devices and Technology aims to train engineers in research and development within the field of biomedical devices and technology. The formal degree will be awarded by IITM and SCTIMST

Program Structure During the first semester, students will be based at IIT-Madras, where they will undertake courses in engineering, molecular biology, and management. In the second semester, students will move to CMC Vellore, where they will study engineering, physiology, anatomy, and clinical practice. The third and fourth semesters will be spent at SCTIMST, focusing on courses related to medical devices and biomedical technology. In the fourth semester, M.Tech. students will engage in an internship and project. Ph.D. students, after the second semester, will dedicate themselves to full-time research for their thesis.


   1.  Tech. Clinical Engineering: Applicants should hold a recognized four-year B.E. or B.Tech. degree. Selection is based on the GATE subject scores in AE, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, IT, ME, MN, PI, TF, XE.

   2.  D. Medical Devices and Technology: Applicants should possess an M.E., M.Tech., or M.S. (Engg) degree, or a B.Tech. degree with an exceptional academic record.

        Admission The admissions process is overseen by the office of IIT-Madras, with a selection committee comprising members from all three institutions. Typically, applications for these programs are advertised in February/March by IIT-Madras. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews, which are generally held in June.
